Meet Your Therapist
Angela Kathman (she/they), LICSW
Hey ya’ll, its nice to meet you! My name is Angela Kathman, and I am the owner and sole therapist at Avalon Psychotherapy. I have been in practice as a clinical social worker since 2016, and prior to clinical licensure I worked for approximately three years as a bereavement counselor at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, Arkansas. If you would like to read my C.V., please click here.
My approach to therapy is warm and conversational; I firmly believe because we tell ourselves stories in order to live, the way towards healing and recovery is understanding those stories and learning how to rewrite them when needed. I recognize the courage and strength it takes to come to therapy - you are telling a complete stranger your life story, after all, that would be nerve wracking for anyone - and I honor that courage by holding an open, non-judgmental space. I utilize a mix of trauma-informed modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS). You are unique and so is your pain; any client of mine will always receive a strengths-based individualized approach and treatment plan. I am interested in both what brings you to therapy and the person you are, as we are all more than our hardest days and worst moments. It is my hope that when you are ready to leave therapy, you are able to leave with the skills, insight, and self-compassion to leave the past where it belongs and fully inhabit your life.
I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with any trauma-related disorder (past and/or present), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, with grief and loss, coping with a life changing injury or illness, or young adults who are struggling with understanding themselves. Clients of all genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and religious orientations (or lack thereof) are welcome and safe with me. I identify as non-binary, and understand firsthand how important your self-identification is as a means to be a part of and understand the world around you.
In my personal life, I enjoy reading Batman comics (The Long Halloween and Robin, Year One are my favorites), rollerblading, and traveling whenever possible. I look forward to getting to know you!
